Periyar Tiger Reserve, situated in Thekkady, Kerala, is a renowned wildlife sanctuary celebrated for its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty. Established in 1982, it spans approximately 777 square kilometers, encompassing dense forests, grasslands, and the picturesque Periyar Lake. The reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including Indian elephants, tigers, leopards, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, and Nilgiri langurs. Over 260 species of birds, such as the great hornbill and Malabar grey hornbill, also inhabit the area.

The flora is equally diverse, featuring tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests, along with montane grasslands and savannas. This rich ecosystem makes Periyar Tiger Reserve a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers. Visitors to Periyar Tiger Reserve can engage in several activities, including boating on Periyar Lake, guided treks like the Periyar Tiger Trail, and tribal heritage walks that offer insights into the culture of indigenous communities. The best time to visit is between October and April, when the weather is pleasant, and wildlife sightings are more frequent.

The Bamboo Grove – Eco-lodge & Centre for experiential learning

Forest department of Kerala, took initiate to construct eco lodge for experimental learning to support local communities in Thekkedy. The 15 bamboo cottages constructed with hygienic and modern furnishings located very close to Thekkedy Wild life.

The ambiance of Bamboo Grove provide very good view to the forest, listen to the whistling of bamboo culms, chirping of birds and the flow of small rivulets emerging out from the swamps of the surrounding Periyar forest

The Bamboo Grove programme also offers an eco-friendly environment to conduct seminars, symposiums, workshops and training programs in the centrally located ‘Kalari’, a conference hall with audio-visual facilities.

The Bamboo Grove package consists of an orientation programme, a visit to a tribal colony, wildlife film shows, bird watching, trekking and a complimentary boat ride on the famous Periyar Lake. Lunch and dinner on the first day and breakfast on the second day are included in the package.

  • Double-bedded accommodation in bamboo cottages; breakfast for two provided.
  • Time slots: Full day package
  • Group size: Two people per cottage; maximum of 30 tourists in 15 cottages @Rs. 1500/- per cottage.
  • For hiring the seminar hall (Kalari): Rs. 3000/- per day, for a maximum of 50 persons. Only children of 12 years and above are allowed to participate in the above programme.

Kottayam Railway Station is the nearest railhead from Periyar, located at 101 km.

Faq

The sanctuary is famous for herds of Asian elephants, sometimes having 50 members. Additionally, it's home to bonnet monkeys, nilgai (Indian antelope), langurs, porcupines, sloth bears, tigers, leopards, barking deer etc.

The old name of Periyar Tiger Reserve was Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Tourists can engage in activities like boat safaris, jungle treks, bamboo rafting, nature walks, and wildlife spotting.
